Areas of application

Research at Fraunhofer SIRIOS focuses on five fields of application for the simulation of urban infrastructure. In various projects, research priorities are set in these areas and simulation technologies are developed and tested.

Digitization of Security and Protection of Critical Infrastructures (CRITIS)

Critical infrastructures are the lifelines of society. The increasing complexity and networking of CRITIS systems increases the risk of massive cross-network cascade effects due to local damage. The planning, operation and monitoring of CRITIS is increasingly being carried out digitally and on the Internet. Digital twins of supply networks and buildings make it possible to represent various "what-if-scenarios" virtually and to assess their effects on specific security situations.

Education, communication and operational management

Procedures for data-based reconnaissance, communication and operational management support emergency services in overcoming complex threat situations. With regard to federal tasks and state-specific equipment for the security forces, the interoperability of the command systems is of particular importance. All relevant actors are involved in overarching and decentralized (ad hoc-) networking approaches.

Virtual planning and supervision of major events

Dangerous situations at major events can arise from both human behavior and technical faults. Simulations support the necessary plan approval implementation process. This refers both to the assessment of the risk before and during the event as well as to the security infrastructure and, in the event of a risk, to countermeasures. The protection of personal rights is of particular importance.

Participation, risk and crisis communication

Addressing public safety challenges requires citizen engagement – from preparedness and prevention to response and self-help to restoring normalcy. Simulations help to better understand the interaction of communication, reception and behavior of people and to increase the subjective feeling of security as well as the acceptance and trust in measures. Privacy and security-by-design approaches are essential.

Visualization and hybrid test environments

Simulations make it possible to run through application scenarios virtually and to define procedures. Compared to purely virtual test environments, hybrid visualization and interaction techniques with real elements offer a higher practical relevance. For example, direct interactions between people can be tested in artificial application scenarios and real security technologies can be examined for their suitability for use.
